How to Play
DishGuessr is easy to learn and hard to put down. A solo game is five rounds long — here is everything you need to know to start scoring.
1. Look at the dish
Each round reveals a photo of a real dish along with its main ingredients. Study the colours, the plating, and the ingredients for clues about which part of the world it might come from.
2. Guess on the map
Click anywhere on the interactive world map to place your guess, or use the search box to find a specific country by name. Pan and zoom to place your marker precisely.
3. Use up to five guesses
You get up to five guesses per dish. After each guess you see how close you were, so you can refine your next attempt and close in on the correct country.
4. Score points
The closer your guess is to the dish’s true country of origin, the more points you earn. Guessing the exact country on your first try earns the maximum score for the round.
How scoring works
Your score for each round is based on the distance between your guess and the dish's country of origin. A perfect guess — clicking the correct country on your first attempt — awards the full 5,000 points for the round. As the distance grows, the points awarded fall away smoothly, so a near miss on a neighbouring country still earns a healthy score, while a guess on the wrong continent earns very little.
Every extra guess you use in a round carries a 500-point penalty, and it applies even when you eventually land on the right country — finding Japan on your third guess scores less than finding it on your first. That is a real reward for trusting your instincts rather than working through a region country by country.
There is one further catch: if your guess is a long way off and it is not your first attempt, the round can score nothing at all. Your five round scores are added together for a final total and a grade at the end of the game.
